Nematodes infest winter-active chironomids in Minnesota trout streams

نویسندگان

چکیده

We present preliminary findings of the effects nematode infestation on winter-active chironomid biology, and how short-term temperature spikes could affect host-parasite interactions. Results are limited but indicate nematodes may infest communities significantly host biology. Further research insects should include investigations into parasitism to better understand climate change will survival at population community level. .

Time-Efficiency of Sorting Chironomidae Surface-Floating Pupal Exuviae Samples from urban Trout Streams in Northeast Minnesota, uSA

Collections of Chironomidae surface-floating pupal exuviae (SFPE) provide an effective means of assessing water quality in streams. Although not widely used in the United States, the technique is not new and has been shown to be more cost-efficient than traditional dip-net sampling techniques in organically enriched stream in an urban landscape. The intent of this research was to document the e...

Winter Prey Caching by Northern Hawk Owls in Minnesota

—Northern Hawk Owls (Surnia ulula) have been reported to cache prey during the breeding season for later consumption, but detailed reports of prey caching during the non-breeding season are comparatively rare. We provided prey to four individual Northern Hawk Owls in wintering areas in northeastern Minnesota during 2001 and 2005 and observed their caching behavior. These owls cached 93% (n 14) ...

Role of Stream Ice on Fall and Winter Movements and Habitat Use by Bull Trout and Cutthroat Trout in Montana Headwater Streams

—We used radiotelemetry and underwater observation to assess fall and winter movements and habitat use by bull trout Salvelinus confluentus and westslope cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarki lewisi in two headwater streams in the Bitterroot River drainage, Montana, that varied markedly in habitat availability and stream ice conditions. Bull trout and cutthroat trout made extensive (.1 km) downst...

Patterns of hybridization among cutthroat trout and rainbow trout in northern Rocky Mountain streams

Introgressive hybridization between native and introduced species is a growing conservation concern. For native cutthroat trout and introduced rainbow trout in western North America, this process is thought to lead to the formation of hybrid swarms and the loss of monophyletic evolutionary lineages. Previous studies of this phenomenon, however, indicated that hybrid swarms were rare except when...
